NTC inrush current limiter
In a circuit that contains a capacitor, filament, heating element, or inverter/ballast for a fluorescent lamp, the inrush current can be 10 to 100 times higher than during normal operation. This can be prevented by using an NTC thermistor connected in series. The thermistor’s higher cold resistance (zero-power resistance) thereby limits the inrush current when the circuit is turned on. After power-on, the flowing current causes the thermistor to heat up, whereupon its resistance drops to a very low ohm value, thereby allowing a normal operating current.
